Two titans of English football meet this weekend in a must-win battle for both clubs. League leaders Chelsea arrive on Merseyside to take on seventh place Liverpool. A win—or a loss!--for Chelsea probably decides the Championship; a win for Liverpool bolsters their quest for fourth place, and keeps cross-town rivals Everton from sneaking past them.Season in the balance
Win lose or draw, this match could decide the season.
A win for Chelsea keeps them in front, regardless of Manchester United’s result this weekend against Sunderland. And given that Chelsea face two very winnable home matches, against Wigan and Portsmouth, in their final two games of the season, the league championship is probably theirs if they win on Sunday.
But a draw or a Chelsea loss, combined with a Manchester United win this weekend, puts United in front.
Yet another scenario exists, however. A Chelsea loss combined with a United draw would pull United even on points, though they’d still be in second place due to inferior goal difference.
Regardless, Chelsea must simply concentrate now on scoring goals and winning their remaining matches. Manager Carlo Ancelotti’s outlook is simple. "We have to stay focused on our game and not think about the result of the Sunderland-Man Utd game.”
If Chelsea stay focused like they did against Stoke last weekend it’s hard to visualize any other team on top of the league.
